The Shadow Reaper. Form transformation pathing (Rhaast vs Shadow Assassin), Reaping Slash wall traversal, and Umbral Trespass damage.
Jungle Skirmisher · The Shadow Reaper.
Kayn's passive, Darkin Scythe, allows him to transform into one of two forms based on which type of champion he damaged most. Rhaast heals from all damage dealt and excels in extended fights. Shadow Assassin deals bonus magic damage on initial attacks after entering champion combat. The transformation choice defines Kayn's entire playstyle for the game.
Q (Reaping Slash) dashes and deals damage in an AoE — excellent for clearing camps and teamfights. W (Blade's Reach) is a line skill shot that slows — as Rhaast it knocks up, as Assassin it leaves a shadow clone. E (Shadow Step) allows Kayn to walk through walls, healing a percentage of damage taken from champions. R (Umbral Trespass) enters a champion's body, becoming untargetable and dealing damage based on their max HP.
Pre-6 full clear is Kayn's standard — aim for 3:15 clear time. Transform as early as possible (typically 8-10 minutes). Against melee-heavy comps, focus Rhaast for the tankiness and healing. Against 3+ ranged targets, Shadow Assassin for the burst potential. Kayn's E through walls makes his gank paths unpredictable and very hard to ward against.
Early game, focus on power-farming and counter-ganking rather than aggressive ganks. Post-6, look for R ganks to dive turrets safely — R makes you untargetable, dropping turret aggro. Kayn's objective control is strong — use E to quickly rotate between dragon/baron and lanes.
Rhaast teamfights as a front-line diver. Use W knockup to disrupt, Q for AoE damage, and R to dodge critical abilities and heal. Rhaast's healing from passive makes him incredibly durable in extended fights. Save R for when you're low to maximize healing.
Shadow Assassin teamfights as a cleanup assassin. Flank from wall with E, Q-aa-W onto the backline, and R the priority target to finish them and escape. Shadow Assassin is weaker in extended fights — get in, kill, and get out using wall mobility.
Start Hailblade with Refillable. Rhaast build: Goredrinker or Eclipse for sustain, Black Cleaver for armor shred, Sterak's Gage for survivability, Death's Dance for damage delay. Shadow Assassin build: Duskblade or Youmuu's for lethality, The Collector for execute, Edge of Night for spell shield.
Boots are Plated Steelcaps or Mercury Treads. Lord Dominik's Regards for armor pen. Guardian Angel for insurance. Maw of Malmortius against heavy AP.
Kayn is flexible depending on form choice. He struggles against early-game aggressive junglers (Lee Sin, Graves, Xin Zhao) who can invade him before transformation. Against these, concede early objectives and focus on reaching form transformation. Kayn scales well into mid and late game regardless of form.
