Top Lane Duelist · Grandmaster at Arms.

Abilities Overview

Jax's passive, Relentless Assault, stacks attack speed with each auto attack up to 6 times — ramping up significantly in extended fights. His Q (Leap Strike) is a gap closer that deals damage and can target both enemies and allies. W (Empower) resets the auto timer and adds bonus magic damage to the next auto, making it Jax's primary burst tool.

E (Counter Strike) is the defining ability — Jax dodges all incoming auto attacks for 2 seconds, then stuns nearby enemies. The stun duration increases based on how many attacks were dodged. R (Grandmaster's Might) passively grants a bonus magic damage every third auto, and actively grants bonus armor and magic resist for 8 seconds when activated.

Laning Phase

Jax is a weak early laner who scales into a monster. Play passively before level 3 — focus on farming with Q and W. Level 3 (Q+W+E) is your first real trading spike: Q onto the enemy, auto-W-auto for burst, then E to dodge their retaliation and stun them as you walk away.

Against ranged tops, start W and last hit with W or Q. Level 6 is a key powerspike — the bonus armor and MR from R make duels much more favorable. Look for all-ins when your R is up and the enemy's key cooldowns are down. Split-pushing is Jax's primary win condition.

Teamfighting

Jax is a split-pusher first and teamfighter second. In teamfights, activate R before engaging for the defensive stats. Q onto the enemy carry, E for dodge and stun, and keep auto-W-auto resets for single-target burst. Jax's teamfighting is strong when he can stick to a priority target.

Against peel-heavy comps, wait for the fight to develop before diving. Use Q to follow flashes or dashes. Jax excels in chaotic fights where he can isolate targets. His biggest weakness is kiting — against Janna, Lulu, or Zilean, consider Cleanse or QSS to handle knockups.

Build Path

Start Doran's Blade. Trinity Force is the core mythic — the spellblade, attack speed, and ability haste are perfect for Jax. Blade of the Ruined King for the slow active and percent-HP damage. Sterak's Gage provides shields and tenacity in teamfights.

Hullbreaker for unmatched split-push pressure. Death's Dance for damage delay. Guardian Angel for survival. Boots are Plated Steelcaps or Mercury Treads. Consider Titanic Hydra for extra waveclear when splitting.

Matchups

Jax scales well into most top laners. He struggles against early-game bullies (Renekton, Darius, Garen) who can punish his weak early levels. He excels against auto-attack reliant champions (Tryndamere, Master Yi, Irelia) thanks to Counter Strike's 100% dodge. Jax outscales almost everyone into late game.
