Katarina

Abilities Overview

Katarina's passive, Voracity, is the core of her kit — each dagger pickup deals massive AoE damage, and champion takedowns reduce all ability cooldowns by 78%. This reset mechanic allows Katarina to chain kills in chaotic teamfights. Her Q (Bouncing Blade) throws a dagger that bounces between enemies, leaving a dagger on the ground at the primary target's location.

W (Preparation) drops a dagger on the ground directly below Katarina and grants burst movespeed — use it to reposition or set up dagger pickups. E (Shunpo) is a blink to a target — if used on a dagger, the cooldown is massively reduced. R (Death Lotus) channels blades in a wide AoE, applying grievous wounds — this is her teamfight-wiping ultimate.

Laning Phase

Katarina has a weak early laning phase against ranged mages. At level 1, use Q to farm and poke. Level 2 (Q+E) opens up the Q-E-dagger pickup trade pattern. Level 3 (Q+E+W) is strong for all-ins — Q-E-aa-W-E-aa is the standard combo.

Against melee opponents, look for aggressive trades with E resets on dagger pickups. Against ranged opponents, play safe, farm with Q, and look for roams bot lane. Katarina excels in chaotic 2v2 and 3v3 skirmishes — follow your jungler for ganks. Post-6, look for all-ins with R when you have lane priority.

Teamfighting

Katarina is the ultimate cleanup assassin. DO NOT engage first — wait for the enemy to use their CC and key abilities. Position on the flank or behind the frontline, looking for an opportunity to E onto a low-HP target, pick up the dagger, and reset through the enemy team.

The ideal teamfight: wait for a CC ability to miss, then Q-E onto the enemy backline, W for the dagger, E to a new position, and R when safe. Each takedown resets your cooldowns, enabling the chain. Stopwatch/Zhonya's is essential for baiting abilities during R channel.

Build Path

Start Doran's Blade or Long Sword. Hextech Rocketbelt is the core mythic — the dash active helps gap close for R. Nashor's Tooth for attack speed-empowered dagger damage. Rabadon's Deathcap for AP scaling.

Zhonya's Hourglass for stasis during R or after diving. Void Staff against magic resist. Lich Bane for burst. Boots are Sorcerer's Shoes. Mejai's Soulstealer when snowballing.

Matchups

Katarina excels against immobile mages and squishy mid laners. She struggles against point-click CC (Lissandra, Malzahar, Pantheon) and champions who can survive her burst (Galio, Kassadin). Against hard matchups, roam aggressively — Katarina's ganks are devastating bot lane.
