The Darkin Blade. Darkin Blade sweet spot combos, Infernal Chains pull angles, and World Ender draintank teamfighting.
Top Lane Juggernaut · The Darkin Blade.
Aatrox's kit revolves around his Q (The Darkin Blade), a three-cast ability where each swing deals increasing damage when the edge connects. Mastering the sweet spot is critical — it deals 50% bonus damage and knocks up enemies, setting up devastating follow-up combos. His passive, Deathbringer Stance, empowers his next auto attack with bonus range and percent-health damage on a cooldown that resets on champion takedowns.
W (Infernal Chains) fires a chain slowing the first target hit. After 1.5 seconds, if the target stays in the area, they are pulled to the center — a powerful setup for Q combos. E (Umbral Dash) is a short dash that can be used to reposition during Q casts, making your angles unpredictable. R (World Ender) grants bonus AD, healing amplification, and a revive on takedown.
In lane, Aatrox dominates melee opponents who struggle to dodge Q sweet spots. Trade using Q1 and Q2 from max range, then disengage. Use E sideways to reposition your Q at unexpected angles. Your level 3 power spike is significant — look for all-ins when the enemy wastes a key ability on the wave.
Against ranged opponents, play cautiously until level 6. Save E to dodge skill shots rather than gap closing. Teleport is recommended to recover from bad trades. Post-6, look for aggressive plays with your ultimate online — the healing amplification makes you very hard to kill in extended trades.
Aatrox is a front-to-back fighter who thrives in extended brawls. Activate R at the start of the fight for bonus damage and healing. Focus frontline targets — your Q sweet spots deal percent-health damage and sustain you through prolonged engagements. The revive passive on World Ender makes you incredibly resilient if you secure a takedown.
Positioning is key: stay with your team to maximize healing from multi-target Qs. Do not dive the backline unless you have a clear flank angle. Against heavy CC comps, consider Cleanse or Mercurial Scimitar to ensure you stay active in fights.
Start Doran's Blade with a health potion. First recall aim for Phage or Caulfield's Warhammer. Eclipse is the standard mythic choice for its shield and burst, while Goredrinker works better in extended teamfights against melee-heavy comps. Black Cleaver is almost always the second item for HP, AD, CDR, and armor shred synergy.
Third item choices: Sterak's Gage against burst, Death's Dance for delayed damage, or Spirit Visage against heavy AP. Boots are Plated Steelcaps versus AD laners or Mercury Treads versus AP/CC. Late game, consider Guardian Angel for the revive stack with your ultimate.
Aatrox wins most melee matchups where he can land Q sweet spots. He struggles against mobile champions (Fiora, Irelia, Jax) who can dodge his Q, and ranged tops (Quinn, Vayne, Kennen) who poke him out. Against hard matchups, rush defensive boots and play for jungle assistance.
