The Might of Demacia. Decisive Strike silence trades, Courage damage reduction timing, and Demacian Justice execute thresholds.
Top Lane Juggernaut · The Might of Demacia.
Garen's passive, Perseverance, is one of the best sustain tools in the game — if he takes no champion damage for several seconds, he regenerates a massive percentage of his HP per second. This allows Garen to stay in lane indefinitely and win attrition wars. His Q (Decisive Strike) removes slows, grants movespeed, and silences the target for 1.5 seconds — the silence is critical for locking down mages and assassins.
W (Courage) grants a shield and damage reduction when activated, and stacking passive armor and MR from last hits. Fully stacking Courage at 150 minion kills makes Garen significantly tankier late game. E (Judgment) spins around dealing physical damage equal to a percentage of the target's HP — this is Garen's primary DPS tool. R (Demacian Justice) deals true damage based on the target's missing HP.
Garen is one of the safest top laners in League. At level 1, Q start allows you to trade and disengage safely — Q-auto then walk away while the enemy is silenced. Level 3 (Q-E-W) is a strong trading spike: Q to engage, E for damage, W to mitigate retaliation. The passive sustain means you win attrition wars against all but the most oppressive laners.
Against ranged tops, rush boots and use W to mitigate poke. Garen's lack of gap close makes him vulnerable to kiting — consider Ghost over Teleport. Post-6, your execute threshold is around 25-30% HP. Flash-Q-E-R is the standard all-in combo for securing kills.
Garen is a front-line juggernaut who silences high-priority targets and executes low-HP enemies. In teamfights, your job is to Q the enemy carry to silence them, spin on the frontline to shred armor, and save R for execute on the lowest HP target. The R reset on kill is only available in Urf mode — in standard play, use R decisively.
Position near your carries to peel for them — W provides damage reduction. Use Q to peel divers off your backline. Against heavy CC comps, consider Cleanse or Mercury Treads. Garen scales reasonably well with items but falls off against kiting comps with high mobility.
Start Doran's Shield for maximum passive sustain. Stridebreaker is the optimal mythic — the active slow helps Garen stick to targets. Dead Man's Plate provides movespeed and a slow on initial auto. Force of Nature against heavy AP. Sterak's Gage for teamfight survivability.
Black Cleaver is excellent for armor shred and ability haste. Thornmail against healing comps. Boots are Plated Steelcaps or Mercury Treads. Hullbreaker for split-push pressure, but teamfighting builds are generally more consistent.
Garen wins sustain wars against most top laners. He struggles against mobile champions who can dodge his Q silence (Camille, Fiora, Riven) and against ranged tops who poke him out (Quinn, Vayne, Teemo). Against Darius, the key is playing around your Q silence — Q when he Qs to deny his blade edge healing.
